Firefox users don't have this problem, though, because Mozilla quietly built a solution into the browser. It's an automatic filter that means NSFW sites won't appear next to your 'Top sites' and 'Highlights' on the New Tab page. The feature has been in development for a few years now without anyone noticing, but thanks to Reddit users(Opens in a new window) the details have now come to light.
How to Turn on or off Adult Filter on the New Tab Page in Firefox browser
As Techdows reports(Opens in a new window), the filter's main purpose is not to protect users. According to the original bug report(Opens in a new window) it was built because "commercial partners do not want their content to be negatively associated with adult content."
The report goes on to explain that, "In the context of Suggested Tiles, this means no sponsored or affiliate tiles should appear within same browser viewport. As an example, MGM would not want a 007 DVD release to be appearing within the same page (in particular, directly next to) where PirateBay tile appears."
The filter appears to work by checking URLs against a list of over 2,900 sites and filters them if a match is found. As well as pornography, other categories include drugs, gambling, and alcohol, although adult content unsurprisingly makes up the bulk of the check list.
If you'd rather just have all your sites appear on the New Tab page and can withstand the judgement (or if a legitimate site is being blocked), you can disable the filter by entering about:config in the address bar and setting browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.filterAdult to false.
Learn how to disable or enable the adult content filter on Firefox that prevents adult content (NSFW content) from displaying on the New Tab page of Firefox (Top sites and Highlights). A filter that is enabled by default on all installations for Firefox that a lot of people are unaware of.
To disable the adult content filters on the Top Sites and Highlights pages of Firefox, open Firefox and type about:config into the address bar, then press Enter. If this is your first time in the about:config (advanced settings) menu of Firefox, you will have to accept the warranty warning to progress to the next screen.
When the option appears on the list, double-click on it to change its value from True (on) to False (off). Once you have done this Restart Firefox and all adult content websites you have been viewing will be showing on the New Tab Top Sites and Highlights pages.
Browsing history information. For example, Chrome stores the URLs of pages that you visit, a cache of text, images and other resources from those pages, and, if the network actions prediction feature is turned on, a list of some of the IP addresses linked from those pages.
Browser configuration changes. When you make changes to your browser configuration, like bookmarking a web page or changing your settings, this information is saved. These changes are not affected by incognito or guest mode.
Like most websites, our servers automatically record the page requests made when you visit our sites. These "server logs" typically include your web request, Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser.
Regarding v0.0.23, I have a website in my top list which requires me to authenticate (HTTP Basic). Now every time I open a new tab without having authenticated there yet it shows a modal dialog asking for username and password. This is bad not only because of the interruption, but also because it shows the browser (probably) attempts to visit it every single time I see the New Tab page. Unintended DDOS, privacy concerns, etc.
Middleclick functionality would be awesome. I used the Google Toolbar new tab before, but I prefer yours. Since I also use it as my homepage, I want to be able to do a quick middleclick breezethrough of my top pages and open them all as different tabs in a flash. I know I could have all these pages load up as home pages, but that slows down the browser load for the occasions I just wanted to make a Google search, etc. Also, as the above commenter recommended, see if you can get rid of redirects. Perhaps only one thumbnail per domain?
Firefox automatically checks the parental controls on your device and sets itself to Prefer:Safe mode. This will auto turn on the safety feature on each website your child visits as long as there are active parental controls on your computer. The feature can only be turned off through password-protected parental settings on your operating system. That way your child will not be able to deactivate this feature through the Firefox browser. Here are Firefox add-ons for parental control.
Once you locate General Settings, look for Content & Privacy Restrictions. Typically on an iPhone, these are set to off. To block adult websites on an iPhone, you have to toggle Restrictions on. You can tell you have done this when the appropriate tab turns green.
Once there, there will be an option to restrict or block adult websites. If you have an ad-blocker or porn-blocker in place, the browser application settings are also the place where you toggle it into effect.
Every object loaded (html page, jpeg image, css stylesheet, gif banner) is saved in the Firefox cache for future use without the need to download it again. It is estimated that only a fraction of these objects will be reused, usually about 30%. This is because of very short object expiration time, updates or simply user behavior (loading new pages instead of returning to the ones already visited). The Firefox cache is divided into memory and disk cache and the latter results in frequent disk writes: newly loaded objects are written to memory and older objects are removed.
When using a dark GTK theme, one might encounter Internet pages with unreadable input and text fields (e.g. text input field with white text on white background, or black text on dark background). This can happen because the site only sets either background or text color, and Firefox takes the other one from the theme. To prevent Firefox from using theme's colors and dark themes in web pages respectively confirm browser.display.use_system_colors and widget.content.allow-gtk-dark-theme are set to false in about:config.
In order to get smooth physics-based scrolling in Firefox, the general.smoothScroll.msdPhysics configurations can be changed to emulate a snappier behaviour like in other web browsers. For a quicker configuration, append the following to /.mozilla/firefox/your-profile/user.js (requires restart):
If you do not see "Recommended by Pocket" (Preferences > Home > Firefox Home Content - between "Top Sites" and "Highlights"), you can enable it by setting browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.section.topstories and browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.system.topstories to true in about:config. Although the option will still not show in Preferences, newly opened tabs/windows (if set to Firefox Home) should now display Pocket recommendations.
